Let’s get into the details of this simple tutorial to create .gif animation using Gimp software:

Step 1: It is obvious to install the software, keep it ready on the desktop and then open the software 🙂

Step 2: Click on “File” > “New” > create a 400 x 100 image size:

Step 3: Select the Text tool from the list of all tools in Tool Box. The text tool is shown as letter “A” as shown below:
Step 4: Add a new text box on the created image, add the text “Creating“.
Now, go to Layers > Duplicate Layers > Again choose the text tool and add the text “Gif” after “Creating“.

Repeat this step until you have completed the whole sentence “Creating Gif Animation Using Gimp“. For each word, you create a new duplicate layer.

Step 5: Now, we will enable the animation:

View the created layers of texts as animation by going to Filters > Animation > Playback. Click the “Play” button, and you should see the sample .gif animation created as shown below:

Step 6: Saving the gif animation to your hard disk:

The gif animation is too fast!!!!

Reducing the speed:

Method 1) You can actually set the timing for each frame to load while you save the animation. Now, again click on “Save As” and Give some name with .gif animation. Say “Slow-Sample.gif“. You will be getting a prompt to flatten the image as shown below:
Click on Export, you will get the next prompt where you can set the delay as shown below: SET AS 350
Click “SAVE“.
Method 2) Editing layer Attributes
Go to Windows > Dockable Dialog > Layers (Ctrl+L shortcut) > You should see the layers window showing up.

Now, Right click on the first layer and select “Edit Layer Attributes” > In the next popup window Type in the below words as it is:

This (100ms)
as shown in the image:

Repeat the above step for every layer appearing on the “Layers Dock/Window” by increasing the number by 100 each time.

Eg: For the next layer, set the words as “This (200ms)” and so on.
Save the file. This will result in the same one as we saw in the first method.
